why Fruits Basket?

 Why is it titled Fruits Basket? No, The Sohmas aren't cursed to turn into fruits whenever they are hugged by the opposite sex. Let's put it this way. It's called Fruits Basket because, one day, Tohru and her 'friends' were playing this game: Fruits Basket. The kids sit down and different fruit names are assigned to each player -- apple, banana, mango, etc. Tohru was assigned to be the 'onigiri' or riceball. Obviously, which isn't a fruit. While the 'it' hollers for different fruits, Tohru can only watch as each kid is called. But since she isn't a fruit, how could she play? However, there came a time when another 'it'finally called onigiri. Who could that be? Another view: I think it's called Fruits Basket because all of the characters resemble the role of the 'onigiri' in a world of Fruits. They're all isolated from the 'normal' people and are waiting to be called or acknowledged -- especially the cursed members of the Sohma family. Yes, the characters have always felt like they were different and estranged that it's their utmost wish to be accepted in the game -- in life. The game that is shown in the anime is Tohru's memory and the metaphor of rejection and isolation. When the part where Tohru, the onigiri, is called, the barrier that didn't suppose to be present has been broken and she has finally been accepted. The Sohmas, who are cursed and who shouldn't even lift a finger of care to Tohru, welcomes her to be a part of the circle. She decides to join Shigure's household. On another note, the cursed Sohmas realized that it is possible to be accepted by a normal individual in light of Tohru. |
