short on Fruits Basket
Monday, October 31, 2005
Yuki Sohma is the most popular boy in Tohru's school. When the Sohma's discover her tent they invite her to come live with them, and Tohru agrees as long as she is able to repay their kindness with her housekeeping skills. Through an accident, Tohru discovers that the Sohma family is cursed to turn into an animal from the Chinese zodiac when embraced by the opposite sex. Tohru quickly grows close to the family, and they become dear friends to her. Tohru struggles to keep the Sohma family secret and learn more about the family, but this may cause her much pain.
charbios: Ren Sohma
Tuesday, October 25, 2005
Ren Sohma. Est. 35 or older and is Akito's mother. (crap, there's no pic of her) She raised Akito as a man, other than a woman. Ren believes Akito should treat the Jyuunishi with love, rather than make them miserable. Akito disagrees, and the two get in disputes over it. Ren also admits that she would rather be in heaven with her husband Akira than on Earth with Akito. She only appears in the manga. She has reputedly slept with Shigure to aggravate Akito (O_x That's more than I wanted to know).
charbios: Kureno Sohma
Kureno Sohma. 26 and is the Rooster of the Jyuunishi (Zodiac). He does not like others to see his animal form. He has somehow lost the curse of the Jyuunishi. He was Akito's constant companion after Yuki. Akito likes to keep him away from the other members of the Zodiac. When he went to a convenience store (for the first time at the age of 26), he met Arisa. She developed a crush on him, but he stays away from her because he feels it is better if he does not love her back. Unfortunately, he only appears in the manga. He was described by Arisa (to Hanajima's curiosity) as a "male-version of Tohru" with his over-the-top politeness and scatterbrained idiosyncrasies. Kureno seems to be described as "broken-in" by some members of the Sohma family. (he looks like Kyo) Read Kureno's blog
charbios: Isuzu Sohma
Isuzu Sohma. Est. 17-18, "Rin" - Isuzu is the Horse of the Chinese Zodiac (Jyuunishi). She is often called Rin by a few members of the family because 'suzu' translates to 'small bell' in Japanese, and 'Rin' is the sound a small bell makes. Apparently, she and Hatsuharu used to have a close sexual relationship together, until Akito found out about it and hurt Rin severely, causing her to be admitted to the hospital for some time. Hatsuharu visited her while she was in the hospital, but Rin broke up with Haru, without giving a reason why. Though it is later known that she didn't want him to be hurt by Akito if they continued the relationship. Rin's character is somewhat cold and angst-ridden. She thinks of Tohru Honda as an annoyance to the Sohmas, but eventually warms up to her little by little because of the kindness Tohru gives in return. She only appears in the manga, not in the anime. She is famous for her tough and independent nature and her darkly exquisite sexiness within the Sohma family. Also, she is known for a trait of her zodiac animal: sheer stubbornness and independence. Anyone who usually tries to go against those feelings get a taste of Rin's high-heel boots. Read Isuzu's blog
charbios: Ritsu Sohma
Ritsu Sohma. Est.20 and is the Monkey of the zodiac. Ritsu has a very low self-esteem and is often seen apologizing for everything. He takes after his mom, the hostess of a hot spring that the Sohma's own. He dresses like a female (often in his trademark full kimono) because he feels that cross -dressing calms him down, and is often mistaken as a woman (c'mon! He's a man?! I too am a victim) because of his long hair and freakishly convincing beauty for a man. Ritsu often blames things on himself that have nothing to do with him, and occasionally becomes suicidal (Oh my). He has an odder quirk of having some sort of "special" spot on his side that, when pressed, makes him keel over and faint. Shigure likes to play with his odd personality and messes with Ritsu. Most Sohma's call him "Ritchan" (either affectionately, or teasingly because of his womanly features) and to Shigure's amusement, Tohru calls him "Ritchan-san". As far back as he could remember, his parents always had to apologize for everything he did, so he is very unsure of himself. He feels that every day, he is robbing the world's air by breathing (aww, I want to meet such a person). He found that it always made him feel more comfortable to dress like a girl, but that only gave his parents even more to apologize for. Since he looks so much like a girl, that's what Tohru thought when she first saw him, until he accidently transformed. Somehow, Tohru convinced him that he does have a reason to live. He just hasn't found it yet.
charbios: Kagura Sohma
When we first meet Kagura in both the anime and manga, she's shyly watching Shigure's house from behind the gate. She meets Tohru at the door and asks if Kyo is around. When she's brought inside, Shigure and Yuki were surprised to see her, while Kyo is utterly terrified. Now, why would Kyo, the one who trained in the mountains for months and never backs down from any fight, be so unnerved as to shake in his boots at the sight of Kagura, a simple girl as his age? Moved to tears by seeing Kyo, at first Kagura can only emotionally mutter his name. Then her eyes gleam evilly, and as she shrieks, "I wanted to see you!!" she punches Kyo so hard he flies across the room and crashes through the door. Yuki and Shigure, being used to Kagura's temper tantrums, casually duck as Kyo flies over them and Kagura follows, leaping across the room. Tohru is completely shocked by the sudden surge of violence from what seemed like such a sweet girl. Kagura Sohma. She's 18 Kagura and is the boar of the zodiac. She has been dedicated in her love for Kyo since they were young. She'll clean, cook, and work for Kyo (wow!). She is convinced that she will marry him, mainly because she threatened Kyo into proposing to her (at age 7 with knives in the manga, or a boulder in the anime to a 5-year old Kyo). Despite her love, she often losses her head and beats Kyo senseless whenever he does something to anger her or make her anxious. As one of the three (rare) female members of the zodiac, she is able to hug any of the male members without any transformations taking place. She lives with Rin and her mother (who is perfectly okay with Kagura's double-edged personality). Read Kagura's blog
charbios: Momiji Sohma
Momiji Sohma is 15 and a painfully adorable and seemingly androgynous teenager with a depressing family life that he hides behind his smile and fun-loving attitude. His endless enthusiasm and cuteness often annoys Kyo. He is older than he looks, much to Tohru's surprise. Momiji is the Rabbit of the Zodiac (hey I'm from the year of the rabbit! Does that mean... nah.) and is the son of one of the richer people of the Sohma family (his father is Japanese while Momiji's mother is German) and Tohru unknowingly cleans the building for her job. He has a younger sister named Momo who can only speak German. He is actually very insightful and emotionally strong despite his upbringing and his appearance. He accepted Tohru very quickly, and even ignored the fact that he was a Zodiac that he hugged her when they were formally introduced (of course, he does that usually anyway when they meet). Much to Kyo's horror, Momiji likes to wear the girl's version of their high school uniform (albeit with short shorts and not a skirt. Still, it's a point deduction for the year of the rabbit T_T). Momiji likes Tohru when he first meets her. He is the younger cousin of Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure. He takes Tohru to a hot spring in return for Valentine's chocolates. Although Momiji acts kind, he has a terrible secret about his mother. He vows that he'll always keep all of his memories no matter how bad or good, because he knows that someday, he'll be able to overlook the pain and be able to remember. (go year of the rabbit!)
charbios: Hatsuharu Sohma
Hatsuharu Sohma. He's 15 and the Ox of the Zodiac, Haru has something of a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde personality related to the Ox's personality. He is usually calm and placid (White Haru), like the Ox is usually calm and placid, but can be goaded into "stampeding", where he's edgy and mean and slightly oversexed (Black Haru); White Haru is conscious during his "black" transformation, but is unable to do anything about it. He just either apologizes or ignores the situation. He's somewhat an interesting character. Additionally, Haru has a rather bad sense of direction. He has a bicycle (but got lost somewhere in his travels). Haru likes to make fun of Kyo passively and wants to fight with him on a regular basis. This all started when he was little. He held a grudge against Yuki. People in his family always made fun of him about how the cow was stupid and let the rat used the him. This made him mad, so mad that he developed a black personality. He soon had forgiven Yuki after he got to know him. Haru is mostly seen wearing rockish attire, like biker clothes. Sadly, he only rides a bicycle because he's not old enough to ride a motorcycle. Read Hatsuharu's blog
charbios: Ayame Sohma
Ayame Sohma is 27 and the Snake of the zodiac. He is Yuki's older brother. Ayame is vivacious, garrulous, and has a knack for making Yuki and Kyo angry. He runs a business that makes women's clothing (also men's clothing), and often wears women's clothing himself (to see if they're feasible of course). He named his shop after himself and runs it with Mine, his best friend and seamstress of the store (Ayame designs the dresses erotic as some or all of them may be). Vain and (just slightly and secretly) self-conscious, he is really a thoughtful person underneath his "selective" skin. He has piercing yellow eyes and white hair compared to Yuki's violet and grey. He has a fear of being alone. Much to Yuki's surprise, Ayame was actually a student body president in high school. Ayame maybe Yuki's big brother, but they are nothing alike. Ayame is much louder than Yuki, not to mention much more sure of himself. He is under the impression that he is the most charming person in the world. Ayame likes to dress up in women's clothing from time to time. His only intention is to bond with Yuki (no matter how much it might seem like he only wants to piss everyone off).
charbios: Hatori Sohma
Hatori Sohma. His age is 27 and the Dragon of the Zodiac. He is the private doctor to the Sohma clan. Hatori is a very serious and humorless type. It is his job to erase the memories of those who discover the Sohma clan secret, though it's not entirely clear if this is simply a form of hypnosis or more of a supernatural power. When his curse activates, he turns into a seahorse rather than a giant fire-breathing lizard. It's because the Chinese consider the seahorse to be baby dragons and the actual name in Japanese translates to it. He is very self-conscious about his transformation in the fact that he is the "great and powerful dragon" but appears as a "seahorse". He had a bad experience in love when a girl named Kana, her assistant (find out why in the anime). Like Shigure and Ayame, he is very tall and is really a nice man when you look at him closely. He is to be married to Mayuko-sensei in the Fruits Basket canon arc. Hatori is the kind of guy who usually likes to look responsible and professional. He can barely see out of his left eye, because Akito hurt it when Hatori wanted to get married (there's your clue). Hatori seems sort of jerky when you first meet him, but you eventually understand that he's not, and the reason he acts as such. Read Hatori's blog
charbios: Hiro Sohma
He starts out being hostile to Tohru, but eventually eases his initial attitude through a combination of grudging admiration for Tohru and Kisa telling him to let up. He is sarcastic and pessimistic. In the manga, his pregnant mother, whom seems to be just as careless and klutzy as Tohru, might just add to Hiro's annoyance of Tohru with her resemblance to his mother in her forgetfulness and childlike happy personality. Hiro seems to have no motivation to do anything to quell the anger he causes. Since Kisa likes Tohru, Hiro becomes incredibly jealous over her. Sometimes it seems like all he wants to do is boss Tohru around. It doesn't change much until Tohru realizes that he is going through a stage where he realizes that he is still young, and Tohru understands that it's scary to come to that realization. His motives are to act more grown up (though he doesn't have that much self control) and to impress Kisa. Read Hiro's blog
charbios: Kisa Sohma
Kisa Sohma. est.12 and is the Tiger of the zodiac. She is very shy and withdrawn, largely because her classmates harass and ostracize her due to her naturally orange hair, a side effect of her curse of the tiger. Because in the Japanese society, non-black hair is considered "disrespectful" or "unnatural". Tohru helps her to come out of her shell. In effect, Kisa develops quite an attachment to Tohru, calling her "big sister" ("oneechan"). She dislikes dry foods and loves an anime series called "Mogeta". Usually seen around Hiro or Momiji. Her mother is extremely protective of her and worries about her often. When Kisa got picked on at school, she wouldn't talk to anyone for a while. Then she ran away and wouldn't stop biting Tohru at first. Then she found out that Tohru understood what she was going through, and she kept following Tohru everywhere. She started to talk again because of Tohru. Kisa is a really nice little girl all in all. Also, she and Hiro are really good friends, and he even has a crush on her. Read Kisa's blog
charbios: Akito Sohma
Akito Sohma. 19-20 - Akito is the head of the Sohma clan. Akito is very frail and has poor health. He often runs fevers and rarely walks out of the main house other than to greet some of the Zodiac members, such as Yuki and Shigure, that live in the outside world. Akito has a definite mean streak and has physically and emotionally scarred many members of the Sohma family, but Akito's rule in the Sohma clan is absolute, and none dare oppose him. While Akito isn't cursed by any of the vengeful spirits (mononoke) of the Zodiac, Akito has been revealed (Volume 11) as playing the role of the Jade Emperor (God) from the stories about the origins of the Chinese Zodiac. A possible part of Akito's curse was that Akito would only live to be 30 years old. Obsessive and somewhat mad. At a certain point in the Zodiac's life, Akito wishes to force them to live within the Sohma compound with him for the rest of their lives in a never-ending "banquet". He even describes himself as the "Master of Their (the Zodiac) Souls". He also has a definite hatred of Kyo Sohma, the Cat, who he believes should be isolated for the rest of his life. It is only after assurance from Shigure that Tohru can be trusted with the family secret that she is allowed to stay. Akito has no choice but to order Tohru's memory erased should she fail to uphold her end of the bargain. Most of the Sohma family is afraid of Akito and will follow his orders no matter what their personal feelings may be. Akito is a cruel person who doesn't care for anyone else. He gets sick very often and is watched over by Hatori Sohma, who is a doctor for the family. The cause of his sickness comes from the fact that he won't live past the age of thirty. He is the head of the house is the person who takes the whole weight of the family. In effect, it puts a lot of pressure on him. He does not turn into any animals. In the manga, it is eventually revealed that Akito is actually female (AGAIN WITH THE "actually he's a she / she's actually a he!). Read Akito's blog
charbios: Shigure Sohma
Shigure Sohma is 27 and the dog of the zodiac. He's the owner of the house where he, Tohru, Yuki and Kyo live. He is an author who writes both academic books and (trashy) romance novels under many pen names (his most common and celebrated is "Karitani Noa" from his erotic "Summer-Colored Sky" novel). He loves to drink tea, eat takoyaki (a Japanese snack made of octopus), drive his editor (whom he affectionately calls "Miichan") to tears by feigning the non-completion of his work, sleep late, and smoke cigarettes. In the anime, he is a harmless (albeit lecherous "Oyaji q.v.") jokester who occasionally gives advice or purposely stirs up controversy for the good of everyone in the end. In the manga there is a much darker side to him as a schemer who will do anything or hurt anyone to get what he wants and be free from the curse (Hah. Media). Shigure is the older cousin of Yuki and Kyo. Despite the lecherous way he acts, he can actually be kind and sometimes selfless. Shigure is just an all around good and funny guy...that transforms into a dog when hugged by the opposite gender. Read Shigure's blog
charbios: Kyo Sohma
Monday, October 24, 2005
Kyo Sohma. 16 Kyo and is the Cat, an animal not in the zodiac, but which legend says would have been if not tricked by the rat into missing the induction feast. Kyo despises Yuki and has dedicated his entire life to someday defeating him. He made a bet with Akito: if he defeats Yuki before high school ends, then he will officially be accepted along with the other Jyuunishi by the Sohmas. If he does not, however, Kyo would be forced to live on the 'inside', within the Sohma honke (the large "first-born" house; rare, but some older and more prestigious Japanese families have them still in this day and age) for the rest of his life. Despite many months of strict training, Kyo has never managed to even land a decent blow on Yuki (in any case Yuki actually fights Kyo only to get him out of his face.; on one event, Yuki sent Kyo flying up vertically five fights with one punch). Kyo runs away even from the people that want to help him, because he is ashamed that he turns into a hideous monster when his rosary bead bracelet is removed. He puts on a tough-guy mask to impress the world, but really he's just someone that wants to be accepted. He desperately hates leeks and miso (unless the miso is in soup) and spring onions (hates: leeks for the taste, and Miso for the smell). In certain parts of Asia, the cat actually replaces the rabbit on the zodiac. Kyo is the cat or outcast of the zodiac. Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cat. Kyo is really sensitive and is easy to get him pissed off. Whenever he loses his temper, he says mean things without thinking about what he's saying. Kyo is also really competitive with Yuki. He will get in a fist fight or argument, but Yuki always beats him or has a comeback. He even has to live with Yuki. Both of them have a crush on their housekeeper, Tohru, which leads to a lot of problems in their house. Kyo hides a secret, that he doesn't ever want Tohru to know. This secret is revealed later on in the series. Read Kyo's blog
charbios: Yuki Sohma
Yuki Sohma, 16 and is the Rat of the zodiac. Yuki Sohma is part of the cursed Sohma family, and whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he turns into a rat. Playing the kind, thoughtful prince in school, Yuki even has his own fan club! Known as "The Prince" at school, Yuki is very pretty and refined, and has many admirers at school, but has a hard time being social; he wishes that he could be with people as friends, rather than admired and worshiped from afar. Yuki has suffered a traumatic childhood at the hands of Akito, the head of the Sohma clan, who locked up and mentally tortured him. So, Yuki has a somewhat low sense of worth and is claustrophobic. With Tohru's help, however, Yuki has gradually able to loosen up. Generally quiet and polite, Yuki is an amazing martial artist who enjoys gardening. Yuki's fangirls hate it when Yuki gets closer to Tohru, and use harassment to try to drive her away. They claim that they're trying to "protect" Yuki from Tohru. But in truth, they're merely bombarding him with one-sided love and adoration. Correction: it's Tohru who's really protecting Yuki (Score one for the unbelievalbe!). It was revealed that Yuki was the one who saved Tohru and brought her back to her mother. He brought her back when she was young and had gotten lost; Tohru has never since forgotten that memory and keeps the hat (which actually belongs to Kyo) that Yuki gave her. Yuki has always had a deep respect and love for Tohru for actually "needing" him. He has a garden in a small patch of forest near the walkway leading to Shigure's house which he and Tohru call their "secret base". Yuki is a mysterious, smart, and athletic bishounen (beautiful boy) that almost everyone likes. Yeah, one time his classmates made him wear a dress to attract attention for their school fund raising. Hiding behind a cool exterior, Yuki actually yearns for a normal life without hidden secrets and mysterious curses. Yuki may seem confident and fearless, but he has a scarred past that hides in the crevices of his fears. Read Yuki's blog
charbios: Saki Hanajima
Saki Hanajima. She's 16. "Hana-chan" is a goth psychic ("denpa" in Japanese), and has the ability to sense people's auras and send out electric waves. Like Uo-chan, she is extremely protective of Tohru, the first person who has truly accepted her. She is very observant, polite and loves to eat sweets (and is rarely seen not eating outside of school). Her nickname ("Hana"-chan) and her manga symbol of a fanged violet relate humorously because they both mean "flower" in Japanese. Hanajima has a close relationship with her family, who accepts and even nurtures her gift. Her mother seems to resemble Tohru's protective and caring nature mom (maybe explaining her attachment to Tohru). In the near "parental" protection she and Arisa give for Tohru, she acts as the protective mother-in-law. Hana is a very scary character in Fruits Basket. She is somewhat psychic, and is always sneaking up on people. She is always willing to do anything to make Tohru happy. Like Arisa, she wishes to return the favor of friendship to Tohru for being her first real friend. The fact is, Hana really is a good person, no matter how scary or mysterious. Read Saki's blog
charbios: Arisa Uotani
Arisa Uotani, 17 and Uo-chan is a former gang member (a "yankee"; a Japanese version of the American "Gangster thug" image) and has been one of Tohru's closest friends since Tohru's mother helped her escape from the gang, called "The Ladies", after wanting to go straight. Uo-chan is tough, brash, sometimes violent but cries easily when it comes to her friends. She wears long skirts, carries a lead pipe, and often speaks like a guy (in Japanese, different word choices can actually categorize a male or female on the way one speaks). Uo likes to swim, play cards, protect Tohru from Yuki's fangirls, and annoy Kyo. Her "convoluted" personality comes from home problems early in her life when her mother left Arisa and her father. Arisa's mom left because she loves another man. In effect, her father became an alcoholic, leaving Arisa to become harsh and jaded in her views of the world until she met the kindness of Tohru and her mother, Kyoko. With her overprotective and "parental" protection of Tohru with Hana-chan, she comes off as the brash and direct father. Arisa Uotani is a fun character. She has a rough past, but then meets Tohru Honda and her mother. She looks up to Tohru's mother and admires her greatly even before they meet. After Tohru's mother dies, she begins to look out for Tohru, and whenever someone bothers her or whatever, she sticks up for her. Uotani is a kind of a tomboyish girl and acts like a westerner, giving her the nickname "Yankee." It's interesting when Uo always tries to get some fun out of things, even when situations seem to get rough. She has fun getting Kyo's bad side. I'm having fun when I watch them take out each other. To summarize this, Uo-chan is just a wild, fun loving type of girl. Read Uotani's blog
charbios: Tohru Honda
Tohru Honda, 16 and an orphaned high school student, Tohru ends up sharing house with Shigure, Yuki and Kyo Sohma. She loves to cook, is an excellent housekeeper and has an after school job as a janitor to help pay her tuition fees (since she doesn't want to be a burden on her grandfather). She's always polite, and is extremely (to an unbelievable extent, believe me!) kind and selfless; in fact, the other characters sometimes have to tell her that she needs to look out for her own interests. Both of her parents are deceased. Her Mother, Kyoko, was a celebrated "yankee"-gang leader, and her father was a young high school teacher. Her Father died of pneumonia when Tohru was three years old and her mother of a car accident when Tohru first entered High school. Tohru is a very kind girl who is always looking on the bright side of everything. Despite the attitude anyone else shows her, she always shows kindness. She even influenced Kyo and Yuki to tone the constant fighting down. She is usually very deep in thought, and due to this fact, she is very clumsy. In turn for her room at Shigure's house, she cleans the house and makes all their meals for them. And no matter how much Yuki or Kyo get depressed or angry, she never gives up trying to get them to look on the bright side. She even blows all of her money to buy everyone chocolates for Valentine's day in episode 11. Before she met Yuki and Shigure, she had been living in a tent on what she did not know was their property. Tohru was at first only offered a night there to recover from a fever. Then in the morning, Yuki asked her if she would like to stay there. Things get interesting when she finds out the Sohma family curse. Read Tohru's blog. |
